Most old people I know don't mind anything but elderly. They hate elderly.

I can`t stand being called young lady or sweetie. One time, shopping for furniture with my DH, the salesman, said to my Hubby, "Do you think mother will like this"?. I turned around, walked out, never to return to that store again. Wonder if the salesman took the hint

We live in a society (in the West) that disrespects the aged and old, elderly--though publicly and supposedly prima facie respects or treats them like everyone else. Healthcare and government and social services treat them respectfully and they are supposed to, but too many people think that derogatory words are funny.
Some seniors are self-denigrating, that adds to it. When I was young I used to say "old fogie".
Popular media like movies and TV often show old folks as stupid, foolish, silly out of touch. Again, audiences laugh, just as they laugh at drunks on TV
. Weak physically suggests that you are weak mentally to them. Face it, some people are rude and like laughing at other people's misfortunes, including seniors.

Young people are supposed to be cool and old folks very very uncool, totally out of it. Sadly, this is the stereotype and some elderly live up to this image, especially in their 80s and 90s

I have heard that Chinese in China view this differently but I don't know. It is not world-wide.

I don't think calling old people names like that is a term of endearment at all. I spend time with younger people, and they honestly think old people are awful. They don't think old people should be able to drive, that they are "out of touch" with the real world, that they are incompetent, and they take up space. It's nothing but a lack of respect.

Sorry to admit, but I behaved the same way when I was young.

ER-I wish you were still here so I could tell you how much I agree with this comment.

When my father was in Germany (WWII), he wrote to his mother and called her an old battleaxe. My mother and his mother were friends and she read the letter. She was so offended that he'd call his mother that, she wrote him a letter telling him how rude he was.

They married when the war was over and he got home.
