Let me broaden your knowledge then. They refer to fecal matter and air that contains fecal matter, not just a person of age.

Well as the OP of this term here and instigator of all the commentary it has generated, I want to share that I learned this term from my father (RIP). He freely used this when referring to older people and quite frankly probably used it the most when he was one too.

You know the old saying, "Like father like son." Suppose I should work really hard to not pass it down the generational ladder. Whenever I bellow this term, I think of my dear father.

I always wonder why they drive 45 in a 55/65 zone, then complain at banks/stores that service takes too long. Testy indeed! lol

I'm going with the theory that it is because as we begin to hit the end of our middle years a lot of us seem to start experiencing more issues with gas (or perhaps just become less concerned about 'sharing')

My grandfather is obsessed with his gas and bowel movements. And feels the need to tell everybody! So strange!

There's a simple explanation. It's normal human behavior to accentuate the positive and things we're good at so perhaps grandpa is a champ in that department. Allow him to bask in his sunshine and stew in his juices.
