Everyone has a different set of criteria.

I have been on pension and retired since 2001. I do not pay into Income Taxation, not Federal and not State. I file taxes every year, but I have not paid into it for many years. So I truly do not care about the income tax 'burden'.

I like rural, peaceful, low crime, forests, rivers and lakes with lots of wildlife, low home prices, low cost-of-living. Places with less than 10 people per square-mile.

When it comes to Florida - I can't imagine that anyone who'd be looking at Naples as a place to retire would be considering Brooksville too. Or vice versa.

Some of my inlaws live in Brighton Michigan - #3 in Michigan. They have spent most of their working lives there (and are still working). I find the area pretty dreary. You'd really have to love cold weather and snow to be interested in an area like that. Robyn
