My parents took me and my kids and both my brothers and their kids on a cruise. BUT they took each family on separate cruises and said that they would enjoy our company in the smaller groups rather than one big group.

Maybe you can say something like, "we enjoy spending time with one or two grand child(ren) at a time on the cruises so that we can focus on developing one or two relationships and special memories at a time. More than two just does not give everyone the experience we are trying to cultivate. And occasionally we like to just focus our time on each other with out children, and on those times we will not invite anyone."

Plan your "we want to be alone" cruises during the school year....works for us! Schools are much less flexible about "time out of classroom" these days regardless of GPA.

While I love taking the grands with us on a cruise, lets face it, it is WORK compaired to just the two of us getting away and being able to do as much (or little) as we want to!

The other option (if you want to cruise with them) is letting them know "Hey, we have selected our next cruise, here are the options and rates for cabins if you are interested in joining us"....then you are letting them know right up front that they are WELCOME, if THEY want to pay up!
