I am confused about how this works.

When I was 62 it was a Sept. I didn't get any benefit because it was a partial month.

I then had all of October where I did not get a benefit.

My first payment was November.

Now I see written and experienced it first hand when my mother died that we had to send back the check she got in the month she died because she was not entitled to the money because it was a partial month.

But, wouldn't that be the previous months money you are being paid for that month?

If memory serves: when my mom died, the date in her last month had passed before we would have had to return her SS check. I think there is a threshold there.

On your other question, I confess I do not know.

Before MIL & FIL died, they were told to have their SS checks put in to different accounts than their general checking and savings, and to transfer the money out the day after it went in. When FIL and MIL died, (actually, while they were both in end of life hospice) we were told by the estate attorney to continue the same practice. No funds were ever returned to the SSA, after their deaths and they could not reverse the deposit on a near empty account. That was over 8 years ago, and no repercussions. F%#! Them.

What appears to be a 2 month delay for the first payment only happens when you apply right at age 62. The rules say you must have been 62 for a FULL month (which would happen Oct above), then all payments are a month (Nov) later. (AKA, in arrears )

This is the procedure but you can file an appeal and say that the funds were needed to pay living expense for the month.

I didn't know about waiting.

But the question is why you must wait the month to receive it but your heirs have to return the months pay that should be from the month before. I can see the waiting a month but not having to send it back if someone dies during that month. I also can see its not coming after that month.

Just trying to make sense of this but don't think its supposed to.

When my mom died, the 15th of the month we did not have to return the check. I did call however and let them know so they didn't continue sending as I did with her pension.
