My ex and I were married for 18 years, he's now been remarried for 17 yrs. When he went to file for SS he had to provide a SS number for both his present wife and myself. What surprised me is the SS office didn't ask for a divorce decree or marriage license, is that normal?
He ended up collecting on his own SS record because it was higher but I'm wondering...IF he could have collected more on my SS or his present wife, would they have asked for proof of marriage/divorce before finalizing his account?

We did know that. Another reason why it was strange that they asked him for both SS numbers.
Because when you die they both get some benefits off of you.
