Thank you!!!!! My 1st appointment was via skype with a rep from SS at the Senior Center in my town. Believe it or not he told me I would get mySS and $300. additional from xh. Imagine my shock when rep #2 called me (scheduled call) and told me I would not get the additional $300. it was $49. additional so I called rep #3 the next day and got a different estimate for my SS but she said $49. was correct! Needless to say it's been driving me crazy....yikes...I didn't know who to believe. Thanks for clearing up some questions!!!!!! OMG do they purposely make this very complicated?????
yep , and as you see that is quite a major benefit being taken away from those born pre 1954
Huh! Well, after making several attempts to speak to someone at SS, it turns out I do not qualify for half of my ex's benefit because my benefit will be more than half of his!
Whaaaaaaaaat??????
Oh, well. Goodbye savings.

When you file before full retirement age, you are deemed to have filed for both your benefit and your spousal benefit. Therefore, if your benefit (reduced for early retirement) is larger than 1/2 of your ex's SS (also reduced because of the early retirement), you will not receive benefits on the ex's record.
In addition, when you file pre FRA your retirement benefit will be permanently reduced.
LOL, Lenora, I didn't see your post last night! Good information.

if you were born before 1954 you have the ability to file for 1/2 your ex's benefit instead of your own regardless of which is bigger .
but you can't actually file before your fra . you have no choices but to take your own benefit if you file pre fra .
so an example i am 63 right now . i was grandfathered and can file for 1/2 my wifes with a restricted application anytime over my fra . if i file before my fra all i get is my own plus an adder if 1/2 her full is larger then my full , which it is not .
the chart i posted above gives a very good breakout of things .
