First off, I mean this to stay in this forum. I'm interested in those of retirement age or close enough to be thinking about it, people who may have had a great many influences and what it comes down to you choose to fill the day with.
So do you listen to music a lot? What sort do you like and where did it come from? Music is a very powerful thing and sometimes just the right kind can help one cheer up or relax or feel energentic too.
With me, its often folk or filk, which is the science fiction/pagan/off the wall techy stuff which is a real kind of folk music if you think of its origion. Most of it comes from artists who sell but are not pros, and a lot by those fans of it inspired to try. I've written a few songs myself.
I also, however, like rock, but somehow I don't listen to it as much. Its wierd but the bands I loved inspire both appreciation for the music and memories. Sometimes I get sad about the memories. I was one of those who were the first group of 14 year olds who went utterly mad over the Beatles. I do love their music, but its as much about remembering the kid I was as the music.
I also love classic symphonic music, new masters and old, and its just love of the sound. I require a decent sound system for it, or earbuds, and nothing to do since its impossible to not lose yourself in it.
I also LOVE big band, jazz,ragtime, 40's to 60's ballads like Sinatra. Mom also loved music, and Dad got one of the first transistor raidos. All of the stations played the Sinatra and later baladeers. It's not just the music I love, but its the reminder of being close to her. She also taught me to love Big Band from the music always playing. I'd love the music alone, but it just gives it an extra special meaning.
Current stuff, some I can't stand. But the more classic, melodic stuff is interesting. Some is too 'formula' and doesn't appeal. But I can't imagine not having music there to fill the space when it not time for quiet.
So, anyone? If you had parents like my mom, did you learn to appreciate what they loved too? Does it make you think of lost parents and be a celebration of them?
I honestly don't remember Dad saying much about music, but him I associate with my enjoyment of taking things apart when I can to see how they are made. But while he liked it but didn't much listen to music, I got interested in country from him, and used to listen to the grand old opry. I especially love those like Doc Watson who could make magic from an instrument. I like the older stuff because its not so overwhelmingly electifired. Dad came from a farm family, and I often wonder if they listened to the music I do of their time. It is a portrait of a way of life and one from that time often directly from the people.

LIVE streaming it on my computer.....I watch the musicians interact with each other, watch how they play their instruments, view the attendees, watch what happens during intermission in the club.....and learn a ton about jazz by seeing all the musicians up close and marvel at their skills.....it's just like being there

I'll have to check it out. That's cool.
Once, a few years ago, my inlaws were visiting. We went to this little shop in town where he sells and diplays rocks. And lots of other stuff. He was showing us his working victrola. He played about a line of this song, and asked us who it was. They were thinking when I said Benny Goodman. I even knew the backup singers names. He was really surprised someone my age did. They didn't know.
My son was in band for a year and he was doing really well, but wasn't doing his homework so he had to leave. I keep hoping in his busy life he'll still find time for music. I gave him a few recordings of classic jazz and he still calls them part of his favorites.

I love music, and attending and performing, but.... At home it is SILENT (usually). If a contractor (or kid / visitor) 'turns on tunes'... They are escorted off the property.
I just can't deal with unnecessary 'noise' / babble / interruptions. I am always thinking / listening / inventing / doing math in my head... I Can't process with noise.
I was not too popular at work, getting radio / tunes / paging / annoucements banned for a 5,000 person factory. But many people appreciated and thanked me for the long fight.
I still find myself 'clipping the cords' on offensive boom boxes.
Having to listen to other people's head phones while on airplanes still drives me postal.
YMMV, but please don't impose on others who may have sensitive hearing, and REALLY appreciate silence.
No, I prefer to hear talking nowadays. The Weather Channel on TV is my background "music" at home during the day. My husband listens to "oldies" at his house and I tell him he's living in the past! I don't mind the silly pop music the grandkids tune my car radio to - it's catchy, irreverent, and sometimes quite good. But I never listen to it at home. I'm apparently missing the music gene.
I am a musician. Some may think it odd, but I don't listen to music as it messes me up when it comes time to play. I play by ear and I need to have my mind clear. But with that said, I took up the mandolin four months ago and listen to bluegrass and 19th century music to understand said music. Fun stuff.
Inside the house we have an e-z listening FM station on in the background all the time. In the vehicles we listen to the same station or play our favorite oldies CD's..
I am a hi-fi nerd. Retirement hasn't changed that. On the other hand, people like me don't listen to music on their hi-fi gear; they listen to the sound of recorded music.
