If your SS was 1K a month and you lived alone, never had kids, and kind of a homebody, could you make it? House would be paid for, but of course, there is HOI and maintenance (or a condo fee if you have a condo).

Let's say house for the sake of argument, so there is no HOA fee.

I do have cats, but they are pretty healthy and go to the vet yearly.

Not a chance. Various insurances and property taxes eat most of that $1K up. Still have to eat and fill up the gas tank, etc., on top of that.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I figure in Florida, HOI on a cheap property (less than 100K) would be $150.00 month, groceries, $ 200.00 (before pet food), electric, water, trash, etc. I could live without cable if I had to. But still....

I had best find which bridge I plan on living under in my old age.

I take that back. If I had to, I could. I could probably get by on 100 a month for food. I would utilize food pantries. Buy my clothes at thrift shops, be very frugal.

Maybe I shouldn't rule out going back to school (I am in my 50's). I worry very much about my senior years and the possibility of never retiring.

Guess I wouldn't need clothes if I wasn't working. 99% of clothes I buy are for the office.

$ 150.00 (HOI & taxes) - small house, under 100K
$ 300.00 groceries & pet supplies
$ 150.00 electric (I prefer a cold thermostat, but I could live with it hotter if I have to)
$ 50.00 (water, trash & sewer) - not sure this is accurate?
$ 60.00 basic net
No cable, I'll get a Leaf Antenna so I can pick up the news and the major networks.

That leaves me quite a bit. Maybe it's doable.

What do you guys pay for trash/sewer/water ?

I could but I'm sure glad I don't have to. That is so tight that I think giving up the car would be almost the only way to make it work and that in turn would be predicated on living near a bus or transit line in order not to become a shut-in.

Yeah, I forgot to add in auto insurance. Although, if not working, I would need little gas. I am quite a homebody.

Crap - figure another $ 100.00 a month for auto insurance

That's pretty steep, especially if you won't be putting very many miles on your vehicle, or you live in a particularly high-cost area.

I pay less than that now . . . for two cars, one new with full coverage, the other a beater with minimal coverage; and in SoCal, not a very inexpensive area of the country.
