I am 58 and feel like an old man when my hair is grey. It is completely brown on top and grey on the sides. Looks funny because one side is really grey and the other side mostly brown.

SO... I got some JUST FOR MEN at the store and dyed my hair dark brown. I have to say other than the first couple days, it looks really good and natural.

Any other men on this board in their 50s or 60s dye their hair to try to look younger?

How about skin treatments or plastic surgery? Just because we are retired or semi retired (me) does not mean we have to look old!

You should try to look healthy. If you try to look younger you will look foolish. I have never seen dyed hair on a man look natural.

I tried it for a short while a few years ago. I still have natural lowlights in back that are very dark; I turned grey "upside down" from what is typical. With anything but a match or gray, the lowlights looked really odd so I went with the dark brown. First week or two it looked like a paint brush, then it started to look a little more natural and then it grew enough that there was silver peeking out all over the place. I gave that up and tried Grecian Formula. That works and looks more natural but made it feel oily. The odd thing is that people told me in confidence that it was fooling almost no one and actually made them think of me as older. Lots of guys go gray as early as their 30s; fighting it makes it obvious it is from aging. I gave it up.

Same here used to dye but no longer. I wish my mustache would go gray already like my beard. My head is completely gray now (more salt then pepper).

Don't try to hide it. Like the other poster said, fools no one. Men with gray hair don't look bad at all.

Actually many people who were told I used JUST FOR MEN were shocked how natural it looks after the first few days. (For a couple days it looks odd). If I were all grey maybe I would just accept it, but grey here and brown there, looks funny.

I would love to have gray hair (especially if it was salt and pepper). All of the guys in my family ended up having gray/white hair...except for me. I have this kind of pukey-brown hair and I hate it. I think I inherited it from my mom. Lots of people think I dye my hair. I tell them no, but I'm considering dying it gray. That usually leaves them speechless.

Give Grecian Formula a try versus outright dye.

I think most guys go too dark...if you go light and don't leave on so long then the gray can look more like highlights and give a little variation and depth to the color. You don't want it to look like you just dipped your head in paint! And do it over the weekend so whatever "excess" can be washed out a couple times before heading to work. One last tip, time it with a haircut so if people say something looks "different" just say you got a haircut and people will go....yeah.....

An interesting aside to my earlier post. I have had people ask me about my lowlights, assuming that it isn't natural because of the pattern (a dark stripe on the back of my neck that is very even). Like gbpakfan, I have wondered if it wouldn't look better gray. But I am unlikely to do anything about it as I think it is shrinking.
