Money to travel several times a year and eat out a lot at "nice" restaurants.

We all can have nice houses, cars and clothes, some solid stock/investments" -yet its these two things that tell me the couple is well fixed, financially, because they are the extra expenses that separate the herd.

We can keep up with the house, car and clothes but we have to cut back on the travel and nice restaurants to save money.

What tells you that a couple you meet or know is doing very well?

If they tell me they're wealthy. That's how I'd know. But really it's none of my business nor would I care.

None of my business.
And I could not care less.

Those who travel may have small homes/apartments and perhaps no car.

Just because you had to cut back on travel and restaurants does not mean that is the basis to judge others' level of "well-to-do"!

Not everyone likes traveling or expensive restaurants. Not everyone cares if anyone thinks they are rich or poor. Sometimes people who are deep in debt look rich because they have expensive cars and houses, and spend money like crazy. Sometimes millionaires drive old cars and wear old clothes.

I can see where the OP is coming from. We have friends that are retired and they're always going all over the place. So it does give the impression that they are well-off. I know that they're not wealthy, but they did do well for themselves.

Unless you see their brokerage statements there's really no tell-tale sign of how someone is financially. Some people that have money are as cheap as the day is long. Others just spend well beyond their means.

Most restaurant meals, even at "nice" restaurants are loaded with sodium, fats and calories. Once in awhile is fine, but many retirees are more interested in maintaining their health than eating like that on a regular basis.

Travel - some enjoy it (us) but some do not for various reasons. Recently it has become much less pleasant and some people have decided the stress isn't worth it.

Cars - many so-called luxury cars are leased but who cares. Personally I have found sensible people couldn't care less about a flashy car as long as they feel comfortable and safe.

The older you get, seems like the less materialistic folks are as they realize how ridiculous it can be.

That couple in the restaurant or at the glitzy resort could be scraping the bottom of their 401(k) account to pay for it. How could you possibly know?'

Most people are wealthy because they lived their lives not getting sucked into all the discretionary spending. It's a cliche but "The Millionaire Next Door".
