I'm on the other coast, and I love it. It's mild here year-round, with highs only in the 60's and lows in the 50's pretty much year round. We get tons of rain and wind in the winters, though.
But, the traffic and crowds are minimal, even during the summer season here. I admit, I'm working on a two year plan to get a camper on my truck to go travel during the winter monsoons. But, what I love most about living on the west coast, is that the temps are mild and we don't have that sticky humidity that tropical places have. Or the giant bugs :-)
Having appraised many homes in Malibu, I would prefer to be back from the ocean a bit but with a nice ocean view. The homes I've done which were RIGHT on the water had their windows CAKED in salt and the sound of the waves was LOUD. One owner told me that the only thing he didn't like was that "the ocean never shuts up".
The view in the mountains changes 4 times a year, and is very colorful 2 times a year.
I love the wide open skies of FL and the remarkable cloud formations with the daily storms rolling in from both coasts. When we moved here I told DH the clouds could take the place of my Hudson Highland mountains. They have met and surpassed that hope and are always changing. I went shopping last week and as I walked out my front door I looked to the left and it was golden sunshine, deep blue skies and huge, white cumulus clouds. I heard a rumble and looked right to see a totally black sky with streaks of lightening and a shelf cloud rolling in with a gustnado formation. It hasn't gotten old in our five years here, it's never really the same.
The view changes dramatically daily, hourly and by the minute. It's not only nice, it's awe inspiring at times.
The only thing better would be a coastal area with mountains for the best combo of all. Even then I'd probably have my back to the mountains, looking out over the water.
I would love MadManofBethesda's view and to be able to sit there and watch the sky changes over the ocean with storms and the sunrise each day. I'm happy to be near the beaches and love seeing the sky meet the sea.
Why lie, I'm too lazy to search and see if this topic has been discussed recently. LOL
Still working now but I dream of moving to a place like Hilton Head or some ocean front community in Florida for retirement. I don't like cold weather but what are the downsides? What's your story?
i've lived in the intercoastal waterway in ft lauderdale many years ago, it was fantastic, only good memories. i've also lived near the ocean in manhattan beach as well as living near the ocean in north county san diego. no complaints, no downsides that i can think of other than its pricey.
I never get tired of the view I get while submerged in the infinity pool in my yard. Changes every day with the clouds, sound of the surf, birds in the air, cattle and horses in the bush below our hill on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico on the Vieques Channel of the Caribbean.
So far, three months full time living near the beach: no complaints.
