Me, I like the word "folks" and will continue to use it...so what? It's cute and maybe dated but then, so am I!!
What irks me are restaurant servers that call the table of diners "Guys" no matter what their gender. Was out with a group of 7 women and one man (a Board luncheon) and the male waiter kept addressing us collectively as "guys." As in, "Is everything ok, guys?"
I finally asked him to call us ladies and gentleman -- or guys & dolls -- or just "folks." He looked puzzled but did his best to comply. Felt weird being called a guy...
It’s not just old fogey words. I used to work at an elementary school. With some of those kids, the only words they know are those they’ve heard in the last five years.
Education levels and exposure (or lack) to a wide variety of literature definitely plays a role. Someone who you have to dumb down "folks" for is probably not an A player (or even a C player).

Guilty. I say guys and sometimes "you guys". Never, ever would I say gals or dolls.
BTW, I actually received an email this afternoon from a 20 some year old administrative assistant that began "Hi folks". I think "folks" is commonly used regardless of age.

I still say pocketbook and would most likely say beauty parlor if I went to one, I cut my own hair.
My husband still refers to a convenience store as an Ice House. He is 66.
I think it depends on where you were raised, we consider it endearing and charming.
Ice House?! I love it but I've never heard that before! I think the "older" references are endearing & charming too & I'm "only" 48.
Word soda meaning soft drink. Seem odd to me. I think it's a northern term.
