If a person is on disability before 62, is the amount they've been receiving deducted from the amount they would have received from SS if they weren't on disability previously? Or would they get both payments?
Standard full retirement benefits from the SSA are calculated on what a worker contributed to the Social Security system over the course of their employment. Disability benefits are as well, so the amount of your monthly benefit payment is not affected by the transition from SSD to retirement benefits.
Do you have to formally switch from one to the other at some point, or does the SS admin do that automatically?
SSA does it automatically. BUT, if you want to accumulate delayed credits after reaching full retirement age, you need to request that SSA suspend your benefits.
