I'm not retired but if I could chime in I don't understand why so many people see TV as evil, a waste of time etc. We watch it all the time now and will no doubt do so in the future. Those claiming it's all crap are simply uninformed. There is a ton of great stuff on TV now, both in dramatic series, nature, history, etc in addition to news and sports. If it's not for you I understand, it just bothers me when people think it's only reality shows and bad sitcoms.
Rant over. Carry on.

The things I dislike about mainstream TV are (1) I cannot stand all the ads. They are relentless and mind-numbing. (2) the content of the 1-hour weekly dramas is formulaic, not great acting, and IMO, not very interesting stories. Once in a while a network will have something interesting, but then it is so full of ads I can't stand it so don't watch it. We record those and skip the ads, but that gets old. Every 5 minutes I have to pick up the remote to zip past ads. Ugh!

We have quit watching AMC for that reason. Way too many ads. About 20 minutes worth for a 1-hour show.

We tend to watch the mini-series produced by HBO, Netflix, or Amazon. Sometimes BBC has good ones also.

My wife and I retired in the Philippines 19 yrs ago and I do not watch too much of their local channels since their basic cable service is limited, but since I got my internet service installed, I do a lot of movie/TV series downloading of whatever I want to watch whenever I want (there's somewhat no cyber policing enforced here).
I don't bother watching movie streaming, because of their constant commercials and does not have display screen control features like my downloading/playback controls has.
Here's an excellent torrent site engine search for all of your downloading of movies/tv series/movie streaming and music. https://proxyportal.org/

I did enjoy the Saturday Morning TV program of "Bobcat-driving competition" when living in Spain. The kids liked that better than Catalan Cartoons (which I am not sure they broadcast). Of course they had plenty of "Observed Trials" (Spain national sport)

We are cord cutters and my most watched channel is Youtube on Roku. I watch crafting podcasts, healthy living webinars, John Oliver segments, exercise videos, and the Great British Baking Show. We get ten free broadcast channels including several movie channels with our cheapo $8 indoor antenna and my favorite of those is Create (PBS cooking, travel, garden and craft shows). DH watches Conan and political talk shows on a Roku channel called Nowhere TV and also loves the free MLB game of the day.

We watch more interesting tv content free than we ever did when paying a lot of money for satellite tv.

And the same thing can be said about the internet, yet here you are.

While it may be true considering how many channels there are that leaves more than enough good stuff to enjoy. As for commercials this is why God gave us the power to create the DVR. Most everything we watch, including sports, is recorded and watched later so you skip commercials. If you see a beautiful owl on Nature you can back up, freeze the channel, and admre the markings. If you missed a key line of a movie because the phone rang you go back and hear it.

My TV is usually turned on less than once a month, maybe two months at at time. My time wasting occurs on the net.

I love TV and watch tons, always have. As a kid I don't think I watched more than the standard after school and Saturday am cartoons but then we only had a few channels I had a friend and we roamed widely from about 5 on. No one knew where we were and we were outside all the time. But I still liked TV.
I think my first must watch tv show memory is Star Trek. I was in junior high and after spending all day at school talking to friends came home and immediately spent the next few hours talking to them on the phone. About what I have no idea. Then Star Trek arrived and it was "I can't talk to you till Star Trek is over".
I don't remember anything particular after that but I'm sure I watched and watched a lot. I also read tons.
I watch tons of now and am not apologetic about it. I like it. I don't see why golf etc. is somehow more acceptable as not wasting your life. Its always a bit irritating when someone asks you what you did over the weekend and somehow reading and watching tv is seen as some loser thing vs. watching football and playing.

I have a aquantence, retirement age, not a kid, with a 55 or 60 " TV, a big lounge type chair and he spends 10 or 12 hours sometimes playing video games. Seems a waste to me but its his hobby.
