This month (October), two days before my regular third Wednesday SS payment date, I received a special one-time payment of $36.00, followed by my regular payment on its regular date in its regular amount of $61.00. I am curious why I received the extra payment, but I am too lazy to wait on hold on the phone, or wait for a clerk (usually 30 to 40 minutes) at my local office. (No, I cannot set up an on-line account because I froze all three credit reports many years ago.)

In the past I have received a U.S. Mail notification from SS about any increases in payments, retroactive payments, etc., but not this time. Each year I get an increase of two or three dollars a month because of small additional earnings which replace one of the many zeros in my averaging, so I'm thinking that may be it. But if so, this would be the first year without a notification first.

Very small potatoes, I know, and not worth the ink in one sense, but I can't help being curious.

I got one too one for $108. They refigured my SS actually and got a letter a couple of weeks afterward stating they made a mistake in figuring my original payout. They paid me an extra $12 for each month I had been collecting. My new SS check reflects the increased amount according to the website and starts with my November check.

My husband also got a check for $300plus, they said they miscalculate his monthly payment. He started his SS this year that's why.

It is probably an adjustment. Your earnings record was probably updated and you were owed additional money. You will probably get a letter in a few days but you could also log onto the SS site and look at your record or call them to verify.

Apologies for going off topic. My credit is frozen, but just at one of the three agencies, and turned out to be the one they use to verify who I am. A SS representative at the local SS office was able to initialize my on-line SS account in about fifteen minutes. I had all kinds of identification with me to prove I was who I said I was, including passport, driver's license, original SS card from back in the mid-60's, employer ID, one of which required a security clearance, etc.

Something to consider if you want to establish an on-line account.

He stated in his original post why he wasn't going to go online or call to find out why. Not worth the time and aggravation. Easier to ask here.

I got one too one for $54. They refigured my SS and I got a letter a couple of weeks afterward stating they made a mistake in figuring my original payout. They paid me an extra $6 for each month I had been collecting. My next SS check will reflect the new amount according to the website, and will start with my November check.

^ ^ This...

I also received a one-time payment, in addition to my regular SS amount. I'm still working, so they did an update based on my earnings. The letter of explanation arrived at least a week or so after the deposits to my account.

Same thing here. I saw a deposit for $90 into my account from SS and wondered about it. Figured I'd get a letter later on to explain, and I did. My SS will go up a big $10 month, which...if they raise our Medicare payment...will probably just cover that.
