Retired today at 62+ months. It doesn't seem real. (depression, vacation, years)

Did anyone else experience this? Hubby who has been retired for 2 years said he did not. It just feels like I walked out the door for a vacation & will be back with work piled high, stress, updates and changes to take care of. It just does not seem real to me. Is this normal or does it take time for reality to set in?
i call that vacation mode. I recall feeling like that for about 1 year. After 2 weeks you kinda come to the realization that you aren't going back. I ended up returning to work after 3 years. I retired too early.
I recall walking out the door that last day and thinking, "This is the last day I'll ever have to work at a job for the rest of my life!" ... Quite surreal.
It took me at least a year to get used to not going to work. After nearly 40 years I suppose it stands to reason. 7 yrs later and I'm still thrilled! I was almost 63 at the time, same as you. Enjoy your retirement!
I was in full retirement mode the second the last door closed behind me on my last day. I don't ever think about work and I have no desire to ever go back to work. I had just turned 60 when I retired.
I never looked back. I had too much else to do in retirement. Well, maybe that is not entirely true. After the 5th year in retirement, I stopped by the workplace to chat for a couple hours.
After many large life changes, I decided the adjustment period for a major change is about 3 months. If your husband still has not mentally retired, I suspect there is something else going on. Perhaps like many, he did not plan for retirement and did not really start his new life, with new plans, new activities, new accomplishments and a sense of purpose.
Clinical depression is also quite common after retirement. Depression can take many forms and often occurs as a spectrum disorder.
I think it's different for different people. I was pretty much a workaholic for almost 30 years -- worked 10-12 hours a day 6-7 days a week for years. Everyone thought I'd miss working. But, from the day I retired five years ago, I never gave a 2nd thought to it.
i liked my job although it was very stressful and i found i did miss the action and of course the money .
i agreed to teach the newbee's 2 days a month and i found i really enjoyed that . recently they asked if i could teach once a week for a while because they are doing so much hiring .
so i find once a week is a very nice balance . i actually look forward to my one day
Looking at retirement in 5 1/2 years (@ 62 y/o) if we can figure out Medical Insurance, otherwise going to Medicare age. I know for a fact I'm going to need an adjustment period....absolutely love my job.....some of the people I can do without, but for the most part, don't mind going to work at all.
