Tennessee seems to becoming very popular with retirees from my area of NY. I'd never heard that before. Anytime someone was retiring all they usually talked about was going to Fla.
That's because all the transplants from up North have boosted the cost of living in Florida so much now, they're looking for a new state to rinse and repeat.
And I say that as a Philly transplant to FL. Who did NOT bring her big spendy ways with her here.
Well to me if you are retiring on SS only probably means you never made much money because you have no investments or savings to help. If I was in that situation I would be looking for the cheapest rental along with most low income benefits you can receive. Very few people can live in any those cites listed on SS alone unless they made money to get a decent SS check but could not save any money for whatever reason. Normally, people that make more money to get higher SS checks also have investments and savings.

If you own your home with no mortgage, you do not need as much income.

Yes indeed!
My goal was to entire retirement owning my own home, being totally debt free, and having that home in a very safe , scenic area with low property taxes.
I have accomplished that and thus I need way less income than many retirees.
