If one is looking for health insurance to supplement Medicare, I thought the health insurance offered through AARP covers all states, where one can go to any facility in any state when traveling or when living in various states throughout various times of each year such as when snowbirding or RV-ing. I think it is UnitedHealthCare. I could be wrong. I haven't read their brochure for 2017 yet.

(SportyandMisty, I realize you are probably not of Medicare age looking for a supplemental to Medicare)

About the state to state issue...

That is a consequence of the McCarran-Ferguson Act passed in 1945, not Obamacare/ACA. There is a section (Section 1333 to be specific) of the ACA that gives states the option to allow it.

Sometimes. But remember, that home most likely took 30 years to pay off. 30 years that the money was going into the home instead of a retirement account. And not everyone owns a home free and clear. LOTS of folks rent in their retirement.

It's all about how much you budget to live on in retirement, and how you set that budget up throughout your working life. The smart people were the ones that made sure they had a good retirement. And part of that plan was to make enough during their earning years to save.

I think seniors are going to be in for a rude awakening with the Trump/Paul Ryan years ahead. Medicare is considered an entitlement and Paul Ryan is looking to make cuts/changes that won't be favorable. His plan would eliminate Medicare as we know it and then give you a certain credit and you go out and find your own insurance. BTW the ACA has helped Medicare solvency not hurt it. And Medicare is solvent. The plans to privatize Social Security are another disaster waiting to happen. So many need Social Security to stay afloat. If their
SS was in the stock market and investments did poorly, they'd be in trouble. It's one thing to have a 401K go south but who would want to deal with the volatility of the stock market for that base of financial security.

You Millenials and Gen X will be eliminated from SS. The younger Boomers as well. Those over 75 probably won't live to see it eliminated either.

It is those of us younger SS Beneficiaries (oldest Boomers) who be the generation to be the most screwed, if we live long enough.

Very doubtful. If they made changes to social security like that you can guarantee sweeping changes in congress in 2 years and the white house in 4 with the changes being reversed.

So true. There would such a public outcry if they tried to making sweeping change.

I understand that but why is it necessary to pay insurance companies so much to administer a health plan AND make a profit, what do we get for that money?

The ACA's medical-loss ratio requires insurers spend at least 80% of premiums on medical care, and a maximum of 20% can be spent on administrative functions, salaries and other operating expenses. Florida Blue's $471 million profit last year represented 17% of the premiums collected.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, administrative costs in Medicare are only about 2 percent of operating expenditures. Defenders of the insurance industry estimate administrative costs as 17 percent of revenue.

Yes, you're right -- I should have made that clear. My bad. I am far from Medicare age, and I'm purchasing individual plans.
