If you want to see the National Parks, there are quite a few travel companies that arrange tours. I think that going with a group might be interesting, easier, and safer.

No more hiking mountain trails for me at 75, it’s difficult pushing or pulling my 73 year old wife up the trails if she does not want to go.

In the fall of last year we did a western U.S. and Canada trip, visiting most of the national parks in the west, plus 3 in Canada. I drove 8,000 miles.

If you're willing to stay in hostels, park campgrounds, eat light with foods you can store on the road, etc., you can do very cheaply.

I have been on a couple of trips where I would bring a medium sized cooler and Blue Ice refreezable coolers or just change ice out, and buy sandwich supplies and drinks at a store. That's fairly cheap and you can get convenient "on the go" fruits like apples and clementines to eat.

There are many areas where a Motel 6 or Super 8 run <$40 a night. Try to avoid staying in major cities or right outside tourist areas.

For your sake I hope you're right, but you don't really know that for sure. People who become bed-ridden don't plan on that and don't know in advance at what age such a tragedy might occur.

Yes, I know: Many people (most people?) die before ever becoming bed-ridden. I, too, hope I will be among them. But we are deluding ourselves if we think it can never happen.

I am very appreciative of those of you posters who have written a positive response. Thank you!

Death will come at some point for all of us but focusing on it is not what I care to do.

One of my uncles was one of these folks that wanted to travel, but kept deferring until him and my biological aunt were retired. He died of a massive heart attack mowing his lawn at 54. He never got to do anything he wanted.

There's never a better time than now to plan and go through with something like this.

John Glenn was 77 when he made his second trip into outer space, so I think driving around in a car would be ok.

Age shouldn't factor, more health and stamina. Stamina depending on what you want to do.

We take tour groups. I know some people find them boring, but I like that everything is planned for you and they do not have to be very expensive.

I would go on a cross country road trip with people I could depend on to help drive the nice roomy vehicle we would take . And no camping. I like staying in hotels. With the coach tours all that is included and the price is reasonable.
