I am going to collect Social Security at age 62 on my birthday in August. In the first 6 months of this year I will earn 50K on my job before I start collecting reduced benefits. Will that 50K count against me when they calculate the $1 SS reduced for every $2 earned rule OR do I start with a fresh slate far as earnings go when I begin collecting SS? I don't plan to work once I start collecting in July.

Thanks much, Mathjak. That puts me at ease. Were it different, my entire SS for the remaining 2016 would be eaten up.

if that was the case no one could file for ss except in the beginning of a year so everything is based on after you file and going forward

Thrill

Unless your birthday is Aug 1st or 2nd. You will start receiving your SS benefit in Sept. not July.
If your actual B-day is the 1st or 2nd, then your benefit will start in Aug.

because SS considers you 62 the day "before" your actual B-day
and to receive early benefits at 62, you must be 62 for an entire month.
