And why is there a lack of research? Drug companies have huge knowledge and capacity to develop new antibiotics. Of course, there is a huge cost to developing new drugs and meeting FDA requirements. The new antibiotics would be held in reserve and used only when absolutely needed. That means the usage would be very small and the drug companies could not recover their costs. That takes care of that "pressing" medical issue until the demand grows meaning a significant number of people are dying and usage would be significant. The average cost for development of a new drug is rapidly approaching $3 billion. A handful of people dying due to the lack of new antibiotics is not going to cover those costs.

80% reduction in Alzheimer's for those who drink 4 glasses of red wine a day. Large study in France.
80% reduction for those who drink 8 cups of coffee a day. Large study in Finland.
Substantial reduction for those who smoke 1 cigar a day (also reduces Parkinson's).

If one is afraid of Alzheimer's, drink coffee or wine.

I will look up the references when I get time later.
