I am on small budget, too, ...Bottom line, the simpler, less complicated way is my choice.
Public Cemeteries and Golf Courses are a nice place to cool off in Lawn Sprinklers. (learned that behavior during my "Then Came Bronson" treks across the country on my motorcycle). Afternoons get mighty hot. Find a cemetery with sprinklers running and take a cooling off break (shower) and a nap. Usually slept on a country farm road, no tent, just a canvas cover (when seldom needed). Slept a lot in National Parks down remote roads. Bathed in National Park Rivers and lakes. Motorcycle treking takes on a whole different level of traveling CHEAP. I often stopped and worked farm / gas station jobs for food and fuel.
