A friend was telling me she found a way to start drawing "against" her social security early and thus retire early. She's only 53. (!) Anyone have any idea what she's talking about? She couldn't explain it so that I understood it. It's not an option I need -- or would take -- but am curious now.

she is wrong . you cannot get retirement ss until retirement age (62). survivor benefits can kick in at 60 and disability at younger ages . but regular retirement benefits outside of disability are not until 62 .

Well, she claims to be getting it. All I can think is that that it's SSI disability and she's just not saying.

If her husband died and she has young children, then I think she can get a benefit for the children.

Other than that or SSDI, she must wait until 62.

Yep, it seems like disability benefits to me. Ask her in what way she's disabled. That ought to call forth an interesting response.

She's either lying to you about getting S.S. benefits, getting disability benefits or scamming the system some how! NO one can get regular S.S. benefits early as others have stated.
