From Wikipedia: "Mental illness caused by late-stage syphilis was once a common form of dementia."

I remember years ago in the 60's and 70's reading often of how people went mad from untreated syphilis. Especially in fiction where syphilis would be used to explain a demonic character. You don't hear much about it anymore. Probably easier to diagnose and treat.

I mean no disrespect, but being 26, some of these comments scare me. I don't want to grow old and lose my faculties...

At my job, it is standard to check RPR on admitting dementia people (the test for syphilis). It is not commonly positive, but it is checked.

That's more or less what untreated syphilis does.

We learned this in 8th grade "health" class, which was really sex ed.

I used to have a brain the size of a planet. Now, I'm down to a 7 1/2 hat size. Sigh.

Is that you "I'm Retired Now" ?

As for diminished mental abilities, most of those people I knew were never too sharp even as a youth.
