Statin drugs can cause cataracts. Your eyes need cholesterol.

And your brain needs a lot of cholesterol.

Daily Statin Might Raise Your Risk for Cataracts: Study
But benefits of cholesterol-lowering drugs outweigh risks, experts say

Quote:
While statins such as Zocor, Crestor and Lipitor protect many people from heart attack and stroke, they may raise the odds of developing the vision problem by 27 percent, the researchers report.

But the risk of developing cataracts -- a clouding of the lens of the eye -- is insignificant compared with the benefits of these drugs, said lead researcher Dr. G.B. John Mancini.
I will continue doing what my Cardiologist, Family Medical Doctor, Clinician and Wife have been recommending...

This is great! Something else doctors can charge you for. Pay me or go blind!
A built-in freebie!

Of course this is only of you can afford it. Otherwise just go blind.

My father had high cholesterol but did not take statins. He did not need cataract surgery.

After the triple bypass, and reaming of the carotids and the aortic aneurysm, he threw some plaque and went blind.

Dear Lord, all these medicines have side effects somewhere else. I hate adding anything new to the mix, for that reason. I'm taking Zetia, a non-statin, for cholesterol and it's working fairly well. Except it's expensive and no generic available. Until now....my last prescription was for a generic! YAY!

They have already found out that lowering cholesterol with non-statin drugs has no benefit! So why does your doctor prescribe it anyway? They don't read the research?

You will see it proclaimed loudly, all over the internet, that statins are so wonderful, in spite of the risks, so you should take them anyway.

NO. If your cholesterol is high because of insulin resistance and high triglycerides (probably the most common), then you should change your lifestyle. A LOT, not just a little.

Remember -- statins are taken FOR LIFE, that could be a long time. The risk of cataracts, dementia, etc., might increase.

Of course we don't know, because the drug companies don't want to study that.

Do you ever wonder why so many older people are getting dementia, or early signs of it? This is not something that just naturally happens with age. Other cultures did not have it at anywhere near this rate.

And no, it is NOT because we are living longer thanks to the wonderful drugs! That is of course what they want you to think.
