THE LEVEL to which no one really cares what I think about anything, and the level to which I am considered no longer useful by people who are younger than me.
By contrast, I am now finding myself to be the 'knowledgeable elder' because several of my acquaintances are just now coming up to retirement age. They're asking me about the this-and-that of it. Of course, I know it all having been retired now ... about two years! :-!
We get to travel when we get the urge. We can just pick up and go on a day trip, or plan a few weeks in advance for a longer trip. And when I get home its only laundry that I have to do. I don't find a stack of stuff on my desk to deal with.
One interesting and enjoyable thing has been how much time we spend together now. We found that we enjoy going to the gym together. We enjoy other, simple stuff together too.
After 8 months of living in the land of no alarm clocks, I bought one. It’s great not having the thing go off at exactly 5:37AM every day so I can hear the traffic report, but laying in bed and having no idea if it is 10AM or 3PM gets confusing after some time.
I feel the same way - I know it has to be done, but just hate doing it.
What would be great is if you were driving around and felt the "urge" to have a dental cleaning - and just drop in and get it done. But having it scheduled is just so - ugh.
Same with going to wedding etc. Now I feel bad for getting married the first time i did in August! I told my niece a few years ago that it was too hot to get married then.
Just want to lead a care free life that doesn't require dental cleanings, medical probing, Christmas parties, weddings, etc.
Might be kind of hard to understand, but I don't understand why people live to cut grass and pull weeds in their yards....
Of course you have to schedule those things, as the folks doing them aren't footloose and fancy-free as us retired folks like to be. As you're saying maybe the irritation comes at the necessity of doing the taxes, taking care of the teeth, getting the vehicle(s) serviced, the old body maintained (doctor's appointments), maybe we wish we just didn't have to do these things at all. And I don't know about you, but I can't see myself ever having an urge to get a dental cleaning or checkup done, or visit a healthcare provider, or do my taxes, so if those were left to my whims they'd never get done!
I did find time to cross-hike the Appalachian Trail. It was the longest three feet I've done. Whew! I had to lay down and take a nap on a nice warm boulder.
