I never open any emails from SSA. Especially since it is "operated and maintained at taxpayer's expense".

The original method (cell phone) was so badly thought out I would have never guessed anyone would have done this. There were plenty of financial institutions that had secondary confirmations and they could have copied one of these.

However using email is a very good suggestion since you have to be on the internet to use the site.

No objection to using the cell phone, just that it can not be the only source.

Having SS call you on your home phone is another option, but I this may not be practical from a cost consideration.
