I have a young relative who has mild CP - ambulatory, but unable to ride a two-wheeled bike. A trike worked wonders for adding mobility and freedom.

I wasn't kidding. Check out recumbent trikes. Recumbents have several advantages. First, the lower profile means less wind resistance, and minimizing wind resistance is important for those of us who are not exceptionally strong. Second, recumbents minimize the force on your wrists, arms & shoulders, and that sure helps me.

I don't find any downside. They may look difficult to get in and out of, but I've found that isn't the case.

Go sit in one and decide for yourself before excluding it based on the picture.

I'm 41 and have no balance. I just got a tricycle so I could run the dog next to it. We LOVE it. However, it has no gears, so it is AWFUL on hills. Great exercise though. Can't wait to ride it to the breweries this summer

I thought you guys were talking about cargo trikes, which I could see as being very useful.

Cargo Bikes - Worksman Mover Industrial Tricycle M2626-3CB

There are all kinds of cargo trikes. You can have them configured any way you want. I could see me riding one of those to go grocery shopping.

I actually have a Segway i2 but there's a limit to how much I can tote with it.

I would highly recommend you try one out at a bike shop before purchasing. They can be hard to maneuver especially around turns. My mother had one and gave up using it as it was too difficult.

The only downside of a recumbent is that they don't climb hills very well or efficiently. But, for around town, short trips to the market, or rides of any length absent large hills to assault, they are perfectly fine. A recumbent is a lot more comfortable, require less effort, and are quicker than adult-/senior-oriented tricycles.

Whatever form chosen, I encourage everyone to ride. It truly is a "fountain of youth".

I have a tricycle...

I love it... Much better than the adult sized version of a child's trike.
