Do you worry about being fit and healthy so you can be active, still indulge in your activities like hiking and sports, keep learning?
I do. This fear of losing it is what keeps my going to the gym, do yoga and lift weights, eat healthy. I see women older than me still hike, play tennis and I want to do what I like- garden, birding, hiking, active travel - until i die.
i am learning a new language and hope to write another book. study ornithology which deepens my love of birding. go into the city for theater, museums, concerts.
but it seems so much harder to retain what I learn. my knee all of a sudden hurts and buckles. i cannot get past 10 pages when i start book before i fall asleep. i am getting new ailments like this sore throat that keeps hanging. i don't enjoy concerts so much any more and the plays are not so appealing. i am getting very selective about restaurant food that eating out more often disappoints.

what about you? how are YOU doing?

It's definitely a problem! I do not fall asleep when reading, but I can relate to all the other things you said.

Keeping fit is one thing. Going to a gym is another. I hate going to the gym and would rather get exercise doing something I like.

In warm weather i walk upto 4 miles, but not every day. I like having the bench for weights and the tread mill at the gym in cold weather. i do yoga at home.

Gyms have an important role to play in fitness. One is bad weather, as already mentioned. Another is the group classes offered, which are often free with gym membership. That's how I got introduced to yoga in my early 60's. Belonging to a gym doesn't mean one has to do all one's exercising at the gym; there is always the option of exercising out of doors when convenient and practical.

I trid LA Fitness most of one winter a couple of years ago. During the day the facility was filled with us old timers. Unfortunately they blared music videos to the point where I could not take it any more. Even ear plugs were not enough to block the racket. I complained to the management but they were a bunch of young kids and either had no say or did not care.

I have used public gyms all over the country for over 25 years. Each location has some good and less good qualities and the crowd will vary by time of day. You just have to shop a little to find the right facility for you.

I currently use a LA fitness site that overall is as good as I have seen. Most comfortable (less crowds and inconsiderates) in mid-day. But time will have an affect on most of us so I can do less with less intensity than in the past. Usually less than 75 minutes at a time unless I get to jabbering with my usual associates.

Fitness is very important to me. I am finding that my desire for pedal-to-the-metal intensity has subsided lately but I still like to produce a good pant. I try using kettlebells and have just resurrected running, something I did a lot of in my fitness training past.

Fearful of the non-fitness alternatives.

I have a friend who plays masters soccer in his late 70s, so it certainly helps if you stay fit. Our Wednesday kick arounds have players from 30s to 70s and he holds his own ok. Sure, he might not beat anyone with speed, but he still has some moves and makes smart plays. I'm approaching retirement age and I look to him as my role model for the future.
