Mod cut.
Depends on your financial / benefit needs, skills and physical ability, and available schedule. (and if pay / benefits is important)
For income...
Sub contract in your previous field of employ... ($50 -$250/ hr lots of freedom)
Costco is pretty good employer w/ benefits (and you can work nights !! Every 'day' is a 'day' OFF )
Airport parking bus $18 - $25 / hr and working nights
(I keep my CDL (Commercial Driver's License) current as it is GREAT income and flexible schedule (for me)) I work occasionally for 'play money' and for fun)
Many 'work' for enjoyment / engaging in community activities (Gardening / arts performances / recreation / travel / hobbies / way to buy stuff at COST / social)

I first worked for a company that conducted inventories for large retailers. That ended when my knee gave out and I lost my agility.
Next I went to work at the AAA Motor Club. That particular job was seasonal, work full time 6 months and then go play for 6 months. That was a great arrangement because I could travel when I wasn't working.
I work part time for a drug and alcohol treatment center escorting patients in for care and then back home. Most interesting and rewarding job I have ever done and I was an executive at a fortune 200 company. Fascinating stories, people and lives. Completely different from my work history but something they say I am great at. I guess I have empathy and a caring nature. Who would have thought.
I work part time at a church office. I am filling in temp until they find a permanent secretary. Everything is fine about the job, except it's cutting into my retirement! I hope they find someone soon.
I am doing what I always did, I design fire sprinkler systems.
On May 28th I went part-time and what that is is 10 working days on followed by 10 working days off. I never work weekends so the closest description that I can come up with is a two-week vacation every other week.
My Working Day and Compasses 10 to 11 hours but on the plus side I'm still getting paid as if I were a full-time employee.

I think you meant "encompasses"
(I must be a retired English teacher) :-)
I guess this question was kind of a party no one wanted to attend! But thank you to those who have responded.
I mostly have always been of the idea its not retirement if you work but the idea that I could retire from my "real" job sooner with less guilt is tempting. Plus some of you actually seem to LIKE working . . . and unfortunately I no longer do . . . but I need to stay long enough to hit the retiree health plan qualification so for now its just all theoretical.
Definitely would not do it for "social" reasons, hence why probably no food or retail.

You asked a question that pointed to a response from those who DO work. (by need or desire).. not those who DISLIKE work (as you claim to currently be).
There are many retirees who HATED every minute of work and who may / or may not enjoy retirement (Often is is a 'downer' to some / didn't meet their 'retirement' expectations, just like their work never met expectations. )
Basically there is plenty of Work and plenty of Retirement to go around to all comers!
Do what you wish!
I planned to hang around until 'retirement eligibility' but my employer of 32 yrs saw that date coming as well, so... I was 6 weeks shy. Several friends were closer... one friend, one day shy. Poof GONE! no benefits, no pension. (only can take what you had accrued in qualified accts.) The State GOV even made it possible to lose 864 hrs of sick leave (which would have been paid out @ full retirement age) and 12 weeks of accrued vacation. They allowed 4 weeks, but varies by state as to whether 'earned vacation' has to be paid out. (over and above annual accrual).
I'm working on a deal right now to "sell the farm". If successful, the deal will include me working as a consultant assisting with transitioning the business and serving selected challenging clients. This might amount to 160 hours for the year which sure seems pleasant given that during my busiest month, I work about 250 hours. Time will tell whether this deal in progress materializes.
