My first job outside the family business was working at a newsstand at 14 yo.

There was a kid my age running it, we talked and he said he was going to camp for a week.

I took his place.

In the interim, the boss told me he wanted to keep me, as the other kid was steeling.

Days later, I saw the kid lumbering towards me from afar, holding a large cup of soda.

He gets in my face and starts growling about the new state of affairs, while quickly throwing the soda in my face!

Of course a struggle ensued and when it was over, I continued to sit on top of the newspapers while reading, (VIEWING!) a selection of literature not available in the school library, until school started back up in the fall.

Age 12 & 13, mowed lawns for $5 per lawn. Some people let their lawns go for weeks or months, and really took advantage of me.

Age 14 & 15, worked carnival rides when they came to town for $1.25/hour (cash).

Age 16, worked for a Honda/Triumph/BMW motorcycle dealer for $1.60/hour (with taxes withheld). Also got to ride a lot of cool motorcycles.

Did you operate one of those old-school elevators with the accordion gates? (No idea what they are properly called.)

NYT or Daily News? I delivered Newsday first on long Island, later Daily News and NYT. The local Sunday NYT was a thing to behold - and to deliver. (UGH)

Started shoveling snow around town after snowstorms when I was 10. First (of three) paper route at 12. Started mowing lawns at 14. At 16 started working in a neighborhood deli.
