I've had similar reactions as an EMT on scene, ok dealing with people which is the expected line of work. Harder when animals especially pets get involved. You are perfectly normal.
How kind. Thank you for that. I always thought being an EMT would be easier because you never have the opportunity to get attached to people. Especially wack job family members.
Very little ambition, I remember while in grade school I just wanted to work in a factory putting nut A on bolt B. I wound up being a baker.
I had a friend who remembers the best job they all wanted in her town was to work at the cigarette factory at the conveyor belt watching for any broken cigarettes because they let you keep the broken cigarettes.
As a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian. As a teenager, I wanted to be a travel agent. As a young adult, my dream job was to be a casting agent, or a location scout. That would have required a move to LA, and I'm a home girl, so that didn't pan out.
I wanted to be an astronaut in Junior High and High School but then it dawned on me that science wasn't my best subject but more important than that, I got sick on any ride that went faster than a merry-go-round and couldn't even ride backwards in a train, bus or the back of a station wagon without thinking I was going to puke.
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a writer because I liked creative writing and using my imagination. Then I realized how difficult it was to write and get published. Besides, I was not good at it either. I loved the Dick Van Dyke show and just wanted to be Laura Petrie and have dinner parties, play charades and go to PTA meetings and my husband could be the writer. Ha! Veterinary medicine was an interest also, but math and science was not my strength. However, my first job was working in a veterinary hospital. Then as a teenager I wanted to be Mary Tyler Moore who had a great apartment with shag carpet, a really cool friend and had an amazing job and lived as an independent young woman. I got married at 20, worked as a data entry clerk then went back to school in my 30's and became a teacher. As a high school teacher not a year goes by that I don't have a student who wants to be a massage therapist or underwater welder. I am so serious. Every single year.
Archaeologist - I still love digging in the dirt. Whenever we needed to dig a post hole in our backyard, I always volunteered to do it. I'm always hoping I'll find something interesting. I love digging post holes. What is wrong with me??
Park Ranger - Actually, I still wish I was a park ranger.
Veterinarian - Until I found out all the gross stuff you had to do and surgeries, etc. When I was really little, I thought it was just you know, loving up on all of the animals and putting little bandages on their boo boos or something. I didn't know. I was an idiot.
Trash man - I just wanted to ride on the back of that big truck. It looked like fun. Actually, aside from the trash and all that, I'm still a little jealous of those guys getting to ride around like that.
archeologist - you must live in a place with very few rocks in the soil.
Veterinarian - My friend's son is interested in becoming a vet so he got a job as a tech at the local vet where he quickly progressed to the point of training workers who have worked longer than him but he ultimately quit because he was tired of all the new workers who were surprised at the amount of non cute work they had to do.
