I have given much thought to this very thing. No way I want to end up in a veg state.
A handgun of significant caliber to the BASE OF THE SKULL, into the foramen magnum shall destroy the brainstem; instant death and no error. Just reach around, hold muzzle steady with one hand, against bowed head, and dominant hand on grip/trigger.
The foramen magnum is the opening where the spinal cord connects to the brainstem; no bone to obstruct the bullet.
This is how executions are done.
Why mess around with drugs and the potential for failure. No way.
I've heard that sometimes people flinch when they shoot themselves which messes up their aim. You said to hold the gun steady, which I imagine might be difficult.

Do it like they do in the movies. Put the gun in your mouth, pointed upwards. Flinch or not, you will get the brain.

Sure but with a gun of SIGNIFICANT caliber, large barrel placed to the foramen magnum, even a small flinch cannot cause enough of a miss to not manage to obliterate the brainstem. I would be very sure and certain and hold the barrel quite steady with my L hand. I can see for some who are not certain, it may be "difficult" but for those of us who are determined and unafraid, holding steady should be easy to do.
Always baffled me why folks aim for temple or in mouth instead of into the FM. Lack of knowledge of anatomy I guess.
Also will do in a remote rural setting so no cleanup, and have ID and note (in Ziploc to preserve against elements) w/apology to finder for having to come across my gruesome corpse. Hoping it won't be found until animals and insects have removed the gore.

Wow, this thread is even more depressing than the "Retire with no money" thread. Didn't read the whole thread. But I do have one question for those facing old age with no family to count on: do you think you made a mistake by not having a family?

definitely not, not a mistake.
don't let the swerve and off-track topic of killing oneself let you think that the vast majority of people are interested in it - the vast majority are not interested - even way more than the vast majority are not interested.....
1 or 2 people get on an idea and run with it - do not extrapolate that it applies to anyone but those 1 or 2 in this thread
many false impressions can be had from reading some threads

Not everyone makes a choice not to have a family. It's not like you can just buy one on eBay.

I made the choice not to have children. No, I didn't make a mistake. Not to mention having children is no guarantee they'll be there for you when you need them.
Of course I had a family. Two parents, 1 brother, 1 sister. All are deceased. I've never been close to their children. They have their own lives and their own families. There's absolutely no reason they should drop everything for me, and I wouldn't want them to. As we've aged, I barely know them. Different states, different lives.
