I saw a report this week of a woman who gets up at 2:15am every morning to work a regular daytime job because she lives 3 hours outside of San Francisco where she works, and it takes her 3 hours of commuting time (one way)!!
The town where she bought her house is Stockton, CA. She previously lived in an apartment in or near San Francisco, but when that apt was no longer available, she decided to buy a house, and Stockton, a 3-hour commute outside of SF by pubic transit, had reasonably priced inexpensive houses to purchase.
And then she makes the very long commute home again every night! Only to turn right around and commute back the very next morning. I don't see how she has any measurable time at home. And I don't see how she gets more than 3 or 4 hours of sleep each night.
From Stockton, she takes two trains, a bus, and then the BART train.
This sounds so gruesome to me that I don't see how it makes life worthwhile. But she has what sounds like maybe a pretty good governmental job (I think it is a San Francisco city government job)
And she's not a young woman. No way could I get up at 2:15am every morning and work a regular day job.
I think it was in the NYTimes. At least she has the weekend.
The earliest was about 4 am, to be at work by 5. It was brutal work, in a semi truck tire retread facility. But you can do these things when you're 20. Since I was taking a full class load, I survived by taking a 1-2 hr nap sometime during the day, sleeping a total of 5-6 or so hrs.
I get up at 3:15 am, leave the house at 5, get to work at 5:30, leave work at 6:10, get home 6:45 pm.
Yeeech......that sucks......I can't imagine you have any kind of life during the work week. 12 hr days right??... I used to work 12 hr shifts but I lived only a few minutes from where I worked. Still, during that time it was get up, work, home, dinner, a brief bit of time to myself then sleep.....a vicious repeating cycle.
How many hours of sleep do you get on a work night? I knew one guy on this type of schedule who got home at 6:45 and was in bed by 8:30.
I've almost always had a normal 8-5 or 9-5 job except for a brief stint in retail when I was fed up with being an administrative assistant. I had to be up at 4:30 a.m. to be at Target for Black Friday at 6 a.m.
These days I work part time from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. which would be great if I could actually sleep until 8 a.m. However I can't seem to sleep past 6 a.m. these days and tonight I can't even sleep which is why I am on here at 2:40 a.m. :-(
