As a retired public employee, a sore point for me is when someone mistakenly thinks that they're "paying for" something which government retirees aren't paying for or haven't paid for.

More like robbery. There is a saying, "Rob a bank and you do 30 years. Rob taxpayers through taxes and it's just another day at work for public employee unions."
Illinois I think is probably in the worst shape because more people percentage wise want to leave Illinois than the residents of any other state and the population is beginning to go negative which means over time that more and more is going to be required of fewer and fewer taxpayers and the cit of Chicago in particular is facing even worse than the state. I'm concerned about Illinois and Chicago.

Yeah that's the lie they want you to believe. For 36 years 11% of my salary has been paid to the state to fund my pension from my pockets and my employer. Just like in industry they match your 401k. The state has invested that money and in many down years have used that money to plug into the general state budget. I am also a tax payer and my money has gone into paying the state.
So that's BS that my pension is coming entirely from the backs of taxpayers.

For every public employee that pays taxes, there are thousands of taxpayers who are not government employees and do not get any of that money back in the form of sky-high salaries, benefits and pensions.
Newspapers and newspapers across the country have been reporting about public pensions threatening to bankrupt towns, cities, and even states. Are they all liars?
Life's about choices.... I'm not going to feel guilty about my pension when I think about all the nights I had to work 12 am -8am leaving my wife and kids home alone. All the holidays I missed because I was forced to work while others sat home opening gifts on Christmas morning. The multiple injuries I've incurred doing my job. Nope, no guilt here at all. I took a job that many many others would scoff at, or couldn't physically do.
I'm not saying that to rub it in. I'm saying that to say I feel extremely blessed to have what I have. But it certainly isn't a hand out. As others have stated, it's a job that was available to anyone who applied.

Overpaid government worker. Right. That says it all. Not worth my time having a discussion with you and by the way I'm not overpaid and I work darn hard for my money. If you think it's so a cushy job go get one.

I don't understand how Public Sector Unions are legal. It is a huge conflict of interest. Essentially it is government Democrats negotiating against citizen taxpayers who they supposedly work for.

Your pension, if it's the NY state pension fund, is well funded, unless some really strange happens, you'll have no problems. I don't have a problem with people getting the pension they've earned.
Ah yes, another familiar comment "Stop whining. Don't be jealous. You can apply for a government job too." Jeez, wouldn't it be nice if the entire US working population works for the government? But who would be left to pay the taxes that support them?
I have to keep this in mind the next time I complain about something, as a taxpayer or a customer.
Me: Auto repair shops overcharge me. Answer: Don't complain. You can own an auto repair shop and overcharge people too.
Me: Drug dealers make too much money. Answer: Don't be jealous. You can be a drug dealer too.
Me: NBA players make too much money. Answer: Nobody is stopping you from becoming one.
