Well it`s that time again. Happy but dreading it. I hate the glasses I have now, big and heavy. I love that they are transitional and darken in the sun, they are also bifocal. I would love smaller frameless glasses, but I guess I can not have them because of the bifocal and transitional lens
I really don`t want two pair either. Any one love their eyeglasses and frames? Hoping for some recommendations
Not having a spare seat of glasses is asking for trouble. A few years back Mrs5150 lost a screw and a lens fell out. We were on vacation. It was Sunday. She had to wear her sunglasses indoors and at the restaurant. At night. She was able to get the glasses repaired the next day.
Not wearing glasses now except at the computer. I have some old readers set for the distance to the screen. I had cataract surgery and my right eye is set for distance, the left for reading. This avoids the whole problem and now I can match sunglasses to my outfits.
But to respond to your issue, I have several pair of aviator frames from W*Mart that have magnetic drop in sunshade filters, one in amber, one in dark grey. I have a new scrip for driving that equalizes the left eye for better depth perception for driving and movies. I'll use the existing frames for those.
I visit my Ophthalmologist every year or so for an exam and a prescription. I the order my glasses (line less bifocals) online form Zenni Optical. I have been very happy with Zenni. They are cheap enough that I also order a backup pair but with different frames. Just ordered a new pair with lightweight titanium frames, line less (progressive) bifocals, anti glare coating all for $62.00.

I checked zennioptical.com and found that they have many rimless (frameless) glasses for bifocal and transitional lenses.
You can go to their website, select a photo of a face closest to your and check different glasses to see how they look.
I priced a titanium frameless pair of bifocal glasses with transitional lenses (photochromic) and it came out to be $94.95. The cheapest is a stainless steel pair for $64.
The shipping cost is something like $5/shipping. You can try to order a frameless glasses, single focal, no photochromic for the basic price (range from $19 to $45) to see how you like them before ordering a pair with bifocal and photochromic options. Do try the bifocal option first to make sure that the glasses are big enough for bifocal (the site will tell you).
If you don't like the glasses, you can return them for credit.

I agree with Mr. 5150 that it's risky to have only a single pair of prescription glasses.
I've been wearing variable focus glasses since shortly after I had LASIK a few decades ago. (One eye corrected for near, one for far - the variable focus at that time was for distances in between). I had the transitions (sun darkening) lenses once, but they turned out to be more trouble than it was worth since they didn't work when I was driving - which was exactly when I needed them! I now have clip-ons for turning my eyeglasses into sunglasses.
I never had to get big heavy glasses to have them. In fact, I would have preferred larger glasses so the focus transition wouldn't be so quick, but none were available since large glasses went out of fashion. They always used the special type of glass that allows for thinner, lighter weight lenses. I don't even know who sells the old-fashioned kind of glass lenses any more. Sounds like your optician is not up with the times, maybe?
Lately we've been getting eyeglasses at Costco, and are satisfied with them. We dislike the optometrist at our local Costco, though, so we go to the optometrist at WalMart and she gives us our prescription to bring to Costco opticians.
My local shop (Stanton) had a two-for-one sale so I just picked up the two pairs of glasses on Tuesday. It always takes a couple days for me to get used to new glasses but these seem to be fine. These are line-less bifocal lenses and my eye has to learn where to look for distance or for reading. They have a coating that makes night driving easier and I've noticed some improvement. These are also much lighter than my old pair and are somewhat more flexible. It is expensive to buy one pair but I could justify getting two at that price.
You CAN get rimless with progressive lenses (no line bifocals). I own them. I have no idea why that wouldn't work with bifocals. Trifocals? Yeah, maybe not. . .
PS Try Costco. WAY better and less expensive than anyplace else we've found. And online? Yeah, cheaper and good quality IF YOU WEAR SINGLE VISION LENSES. Notoriously inaccurate for progressives. I have no experience with bifocals.
