I'm not retired but I'm in my late 50s. I never get tired of shoes, and yes, it's a girly thing acquired in my youth.
I inherited a few Viking Glass vases (from the late 50s early 60s) from my mom. They are considered Mid Century Modern now, and I have begun collecting them with a vengeance.
I'll post them later. They are really pretty and still some what affordable.
I think women who go to Europe for 10 days and only take 2 pair of shoes are aliens out to take over our bodies.
Ha ha! I did not realize of being an alien. I am packing today for an 18-days trip to Europe and only bring an extra pair of shoes besides the hiking shoes which I will be wearing most of the time.
When travel, I only pack another pair of water shoes/boots for special purposes like scuba diving, rowing or boating.
Honestly, I don't understand the typical woman's obsession with shoes especially the desire to match shoes color with outfit. At any given time, I have no more than 5-6 pairs of footwear for different purposes (working in the garden, hiking/birding, rowing, walking/shoveling snow, wearing around the house and formal occasions). My shoes are neutral color (black or tan) to go with pretty much everything.

I have a lot of shoes, but would never pack a bunch for a trip.
You mentioned matching - i'm weird about that. I never plan to "match", but it just happens. Maybe cuz I stick to the same color family. I'll be walking out the door and look down at what I have on and think - wow - I look good! LOL
