I was surprised at the sheer volume of complaints which would cause the senior moderator to place this forum at the top of the list of all City-Data forums for that volume. You were not surprised by it?
No. Old people are by far the largest complainers so I am not surprised.
I haven't noticed that many young people posting but maybe their posts are removed before I notice they posted. On the occasion they have I wonder why they are here. Sometimes if its a specific question sure, pass along a little experience. But just to chatter about their someday whatevers is not really appropriate.
I'll be candid - that's fine by me. The world by and large caters to the young. This is the only retirement "place" I know of. You can be young on every other forum here and around the internet. I like that the forum hasn't been too narrow about the definition about retirement and allows the ageing part but don't think you have to change the name.
Sorry to hear there is complaining. I doubt that the moderators respond blindly to every complaint. I like it here. I think the moderators must be doing a good job. Thank you.
The biggest problem here with ageism is it works both ways and no one sees that.
The old people think the young people are dumb and stupid, and the young think the old are dumb and stupid and don't know anything either! Neither age bracket can see they are as bad as the other.
"Wisdom comes with age". I disagree. I think WISDOM comes from EXPERIENCES. BOTH can have WISDOM, based on their experiences. Being old does not automatically make one wise. But experiences do.
And anyone 30-ish to 50s are just caught in the middle.
And everyone's experiences and therefore WISDOM, is different.
When I was in the dating game electronically in my 30s, I was amazed at the 28, 29 years old who would put in their profile "no one over 30". Um, uh, duh...you're just a short time away from your marker yourself!! ( I was early 30s, so not too far older than they, but that " 3" in front of the age number scared them off!!!). Reminded me of stickers in cereal when i was a teen " dont trust anyone over 30"!!
May, as I said before we are ALL AGING . AND gaining EXPERIENCES.

Anyone interested in RETIREMENT TOPICS should be able to post here, regardless of not yet near but wanting to know about retirement, to those who retired long ago.
Maybe we can all learn from one another.
Gaining EXPERIENCES and thusly WISDOM, from each other could help us all.

A few years ago I suggested that division in About the Forum and the Administrator himself said it's not going to happen.
Some observations: There are a lot of reported posts from the Retirement Forum (personally, to me it always looks like there are more from Politics & Other Controversies) and a lot of these reported posts are not needed because they do not break the TOS. Thus the note about not reporting off topic subjects, for the most part. We are like family here and since most of us are older, most of us want the opinions and support of older people. That's why people here might talk about their pets--some older people can get lonely so a pet is like family. Or we might talk about arthritis because most older people do develop arthritis--and we want the advice of our peers. Arthritis is also discussed on Health & Wellness but some of the best advice on the health of older people shows up on this forum, imho.
It's usually the Already Retired people who are discussing what may seem trivial to others and some think they should take it to another forum. But these are people who are past the financial planning stage for the most part and need to talk about day to day life in retirement. These people want to connect with other retirees on what may seem off topic and trivial to others but to them it's about their lives--like --Do you eat three meals a day? or How is your senior center? How often do you eat out? or what was the worst job you ever had? If you're not retired yet and this doesn't pertain to you, just skip it. It's important to many people and serves a need.
But that doesn't mean that people should not report posts that include personal attacks, obscenity, spam, or some annoying troll who just comes along and makes meaningless, annoying comments. Those reports on posts that break the TOS are really important and will be addressed. As long as we keep it civil and don't gang up on people, keep reporting really truly bad rule-breaking posts, and remain tolerant of others' views, we can still skim along without being assigned a moderator.
Surprised the Politics forum isn't the most reported forum. There are some real trolls there.
I may be wrong but, I think that the Politics forum is probably given a lot more latitude than the other forums. It's known that it is kind of going to be the ... Wild West, so to speak. It is "Politics and Other Controversies", after all. It's assumed that it is going to be, well, controversial.
Then lets start up a subforum where those people can just repeat the same mantra and fresh ideas are a no no and you must be voted in by the other and you can be voted out by them too.
Actually they should not even be on a public forum but maybe have their own private facebook page.
I hope as I age I never get as sensitive and closed minded as what I am perceiving some people are apparently here.

I like to cruise the different sections of the forum, and see what all kinds of people are talking about, and join a variety of conversations.

heck yea - I comment in the "parenting" section too even though I don't have kids. I figure I was the product of a parent, so I have that right!! Gotta tell them how to do it - how we wanted to be raised - .
