Being alone never, ever made me feel like a lesser person. I am married now and remember the days of enjoying the holidays without having to cook, clean up, listen to squabbling, etc.

Maybe I will look back and wish for these annoyances some day, if I outlive my husband, but I doubt it.

What to say to those who inquire -- or who pity you when they hear the answer -- could probably fill another thread!

I picked my movie for tomorrow. It's the new film starring Colin Farrell and Denzel Washington. It's called "Roman J. Israel, Esq." Should be fun.

I just had a cashier at Fred Meyer pity me. He was asking the woman before me if she was responsible for pumpkin pie and mimosas based on what she was buying. She said yes. I dunno if she really was, or just humoring him but it was funny.

So he asked me what I was doing for T-giving. I was buying ice cream (among other things) so I said I'm eating ice cream. He said What? Is that all? On such a special day? I said yep with such satisfaction that he backed down and said well if you're happy doing that. LOL

That's one nosy clerk! Wonder what he asks people buying adult diapers? Haha.

But obviously, yes, SOCIETY pities those who are alone on holidays; that's just a fact.

I'm not sure that is true. I think there is a lot of pretense. Plenty of people do not spend a traditional and satisfying Thanksgiving as pictured. People often hide the truth about their fractured family or their unhappy Thanksgiving being with others/relatives or that they are alone or choose to be alone. A facade is often constructed - where all the mediocre and unsatisfying and contentious Thanksgivings are hidden.

Same goes for the Christmas holidays.

But many people do have happy holidays.

Right, but that only proves my point: that there's societal pressure to convey an image of a happy holiday shared with others.

The worst part about spending holiday time alone for me, is the people who ask me what I'm doing. I like my solo holidays, what I don't like is having to explain that to people and suffering the pitying looks or comments.
