I grew up in a family that never celebrated the holidays (long story). When I got married, my wife decorated our brand new home to the hilt for Christmas. She died at the age of 19, three months pregnant with our first child, six days before Christmas. We were only married for a little over five months. I never remarried. I spent 40 consecutive Christmases in a patrol car.
Now that i'm retired, I spend the holidays serving food to the less fortunate on Skid Row, my last patrol assignment. I've been very blessed in many ways, so I load up the back seat and trunk of my car with toys and toiletries to give out to the homeless and displaced. To see their faces brighten up with hope for better days ahead is the best Christmas gift of all.
Merry Christmas or Winter Solstice or whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year and congratulations on completing another revolution around the Sun!
What a kind post. I find this time of year difficult. Even though I am married, I find myself feeling very alone. Not much of a support network for me, and that's ok. I'm more blessed than some.

'sounds to me she left you a lot. Thank you for forty safe Christmas Days. And Merry Christmas, old man.
May we all regardless of faith feel blessed as 2017 winds down. May you find peace and love in your heart for others and may their peace and love rain down on you.
For those who find a special love for Christmas feel the breath of heaven as we celebrate a special day.
There are many special days this time of year and may we all feel the love that unites all of us.
Thanks for the wishes- I'm still thankful to have elderly parents to enjoy the day with because I know that I won't have that opportunity sometime in the future - and many retirees can't say they spend the day w/ parents anymore. So very thankful.
BTW, some of my fav Christmas Days were spent on the beaches (Ewa) in Hawaii as a kid....still vivid memories decades later.
