I still work a part time job as a substitute teacher. Kindergarten and Special Ed are my favorites.
I feel like I am doing something worthwhile and I keep my hand into using my brain.
The other day a kiddo came up to me while I was subbing a science class and she asked me to help her understand a novel "The Great Gatsby"
I felt first relieved that I had read the Great Gatsby and second that we had a good discussion as to what the underlying meaning of the book was. She was stumped. But I understood it was a novel of class old money versus new and the great divide between.
I felt useful. I was surprised that she just immediately assumed I would know what the book was about and the underlying meaning. Glad I did!
I have three more months of work. The OP's life sounds a lot what I am imagining for myself....including the few cons. Overall, this is very encouraging! I am imagining next summer when I can walk across the street every morning to the neighborhood pool to swim laps to start the day. Every morning. I can hardly believe I will really be able to do this!

I'll be hitting our HOA pool long before the kids get there....
I still say a prayer of thankfulness when I wake up each Monday morning and realize I no longer have to go to work!!!
Monday mornings are so damn good! Man were they awful when I was working...the reality wasn't actually that bad , but Sunday nights and just all the "how was your weekend" blabber around the watercolor...
After 3 months of retirement, the novelty of not having to be at work on Monday morning is starting to lessen. But then I got stuck by icy weather while visiting out of state relatives for the holidays and had to lengthen my trip a few days. Being able to do this and not worry about getting back home on a schedule has delighted me.

After only 12 Mondays, the novelty is wearing off for you??
I've been retired 8 years and I'm still thrilled and overjoyed by not needing to get up in the morning for work every day, being able to turn over and go back to sleep, no Sunday evening letdown about free time being over, no work requirements, no Monday morning commutes, no commutes whatsoever on any morning, no daily work obligation, my time is my own, no slave to the clock and slave to regiment!
thrilled and overjoyed, not kidding.

I work from home full time and have been for the last 15 or so years. What you describe I already feel often. Especially dreading Mondays - I don't have that either as I don't really have to "wake and get ready to go in". As for retirement, I personally prefer to have a goal or task everyday. I've been off the last 2 weeks and I don't know what to do with myself anymore. That's not to say I'm ready for Tuesday (a new year means all my metrics restart too and I dread that the most). Just another perspective... I think having to go into an office is the biggest gripe for working, not so much the work itself for many - at least for white collar jobs.
