They still have a person in front in the Walmart I go to but it's to check your cart as you leave and show them your receipt.
That store has about 20 self checkouts.

They started that last year. What ticks me off though is that it took me seven years to reach that wage and, even though we do get raises every year, I'm wondering how they are going to go with us longer employed people. The overnight people will always get $1 more an hour so they'll go to $12 hour. I know, a lot of people still think that's 'chicken feed' but when you start at $8-9 hour it's not such a bad thing. Because of this more people are opting to go with the 401k plan and quite a few own shares of stock. We have people who've been there 20+ years and they are doing darn good!

Some stores did, I guess, but ours never did. We have always had greeters and still do. That was just a bad 'experiment' I think. They DO serve a purpose being the first AND last people shoppers see at the store.

We have 17 self checkouts and they are one of the reasons we still have greeters who check receipts. You'd be amazed at how people try to 'cheat' at the self checkouts. Our new scanners and cameras are very good at spotting that these days though. Basically they are mainly checking large unbagged items and they are making sure that we cashiers are catching everything. It's really easy to miss large bags of pet food, cases of water, beer, etc. on the bottom of a basket. I've done it...

Today is the first I've heard about that. In a way I can see why they are doing it if they have saturated the market in an area then each store would be less profitable. And they have acquired two more e-commerce companies so rather than build new distribution centers, just use the ones already there.

I DO feel sorry for all those associates losing their jobs but I also know that Walmart is pretty good about helping them move on. They will still need associates to work in them and if they grow, as expected, I think it'll be okay. It takes time and in the meantime I hope they do alright. Scary. And I DO think it was rude and inconsiderate the way they did it with no warning, etc.. That's just not right!

Always thought that was a silly position but it offers employment to the unemployable so why not?
