But it also has to do with the intent in 1939 which was to add benefits for dependents for what the originators felt was security for families.

Yeah, I'm fine with SS benefits for the spouse and children but I don't understand why people who are OK with spousal benefits are having a fit over children receiving benefits. The SS benefits are for the family. If a spouse can receive them, then so should children who are eligible.
