We get them here in NE Florida. No-See-ums are so tiny, they are like a black spec on you when they bite. They feel like a mosquito bit. I would hardly say painful. In fact you get bitten and after about 4 hours is when they start to itch. Deer flies are a different story, but they are big and you definitely see-um. They also bit through clothing.

I've been spoiled living in CO the past few years. No insects except for the occasional spiders that come out on hot days in the spring. We will be moving back east soon, but I could never live where those cave spiders dwell. Had to deal with them when taking care of my mother in SE VA her later years, and I hate them with a passion.

We have some very, very tiny gnatlike bugs here. When they bite, they feel like they're sticking a needle in you. But there are no after effects like itching. I read that they are actually harvesting bits of dry skin not sucking blood. They like to bite my heels. They also bite my dogs who jump and bite at them, but they are way too small to get. I was lucky once to be able to see one when it was biting my foot.

Another reason I'm glad I picked Arizona. The last 2 years in small town Minnesota there was an infestation of small flying insects. They didn't bite but would get into your nose & mouth, if you opened it. I'd never seen them before but there were swarms every summer. And the Asian beetles? They covered the outside doors & crept in through the air conditioning vents or wherever they could. Yuck.
