We have known so many people who retire and 'waste' away by watching TV or becoming couch potatoes. For many years, we have searched, by travelling, to look for our retirement location. We plan to lead an active retirement life, by playing tennis, cards, going to social events, etc... We have bought property in a gated development that has a club and sponsors many activities. We have friends and relatives that don't think about these things (pre-retirement). Is this typical or are we weird?

I think retirement is whatever you want it to be.

I think sometimes the most important and overarching factor is the need to stop working at that job or that place or career. The details can be worked on later.

Yes, I agree. But both sets of our parents and others we have known didn't think about retirement before they retired, didn't have any sort of plan and ended up 'wasting' away mentally and physically earlier than they should have.

1) do not have enough money for any type of gated community or homes in a special community which has activities

2) abhor cards! - would be the last thing I would ever choose to do

3) play tennis? - do not have the ability to do so on a number of levels

4) active? abhor that term! not the action of being involved, just the term!

But to answer your question, I have a vast number of interests and hobbies, and I'm never bored due to these. Just living life is enough - without a lot of trappings.

People who had few or no interests or few hobbies before retiring might not have them during retirement.

Maybe wasting away was their plan. Being active or not being active is a personal preference.

I don't think that was our parents' case.

Neither. I agree with one of the previous posters....retirement is whatever you want it to be, and it can change considerably from year to year. Enjoy your retirement but don't judge others as to how they want to spend their retirement.

My question was in no way meant to judge others. I apologize if it came across that way. Perhaps we're overthinking things..

Lizap, I think wasting away mentally and physically too soon or at all in retirement is a very legitimate concern and idea!

and to be avoided!....

One never really needs to waste away mentally even if one's body starts to have some problems. (for the majority who never have dementia)
