I know a lot of guys around your age with the same habit. Some drink, but not very heavily. No one seems to have any memory impairment, and everyone is working and productive into their 60s.
Yes brownies can make you fat! However....when I was deep in my drinking last year, I went from about 250 lbs to 175 lbs and my fitness went from full court B-Ball to, I can barely walk! I'm still recovering from that and brownie consumption has had no impact. Interesting about short term memory, mine has definitely degraded over time. If I stopped eating brownies, would it return? I don't know, dang it, I forgot the question!
Alcohol is empty calories. Were you basically not eating?
Do some research. I was looking thru my bookmarks because I know I had something on the bad effects of weed. Couldn't locate THAT article, but look what I did find: It's from 2014, but still..... https://www.biosciencetechnology.com...-affect-memory

One of my favorite haunts during the week is to go the gym after work and work up an appetite. There's a BBQ place I like that's open fairly late after I get out of the gym. I'll usually get a pulled pork or brisket sandwich - I eat Carolina sauce on pork and a "Texas Tea" sauce on the beef, and fried okra. I'll also order a pound of smoked wings in a mayonnaise-based BBQ sauce that is popular in Alabama. I'll wash it down with a couple of craft beers brewed on site
