I am so paranoid about falling. I hold on to everything. In the winter I just assume that black ice is every where. I do have arthritis in my hip, so it reminds me to hold on. So far so good, still standing.

I tripped on some uneven pavement one time. I have very bad knees and bifocals. Between the two, I need to be very careful walking around outside. I think I have a couple of new knees in my future.

I fall very often and always have. Perhaps once, every 2 weeks or so. Why? I am ballet trained and skated. Thus, falling is 'normal' and I don't fight the fall. Even as a 67 yr old, I move fast - thus, am more at risk for falls. I also have dogs, which are often the cause for the fall. I've only had one really bad fall, off a ladder, about 8 feet up, years ago. But I was OK.

Sure, I don't do the sort of ladder work, or climb trees with my sawz-all slung over my shoulder - anymore. But I still go on the roof for various reasons and do my own painting, interior and exterior, using extension ladders.

I'd advise older folks, heck, all folks, to learn ballet/yoga based balancing exercises and to even take walking lessons from a modeling agency. No kidding. Best thing I ever did. Also, keep your eyes and feet in the best condition possible ! (as I sit here, wrapped up and recovering from my 7th foot surgery!)

Am I the only one that doesn't get why this is 'normal'?

Define "advanced age."

One time my cat tripped me on the stairs. She was advanced age, for a cat.

I haven't had any falls, but my mom, at 92, seems to fall once a month or so. She hasn't done any great damage so far, it's usually slowly and to a "soft" surface. Her doctor said from her description it isn't a balance problem, it's her muscles just giving way. Not much we can do aside from installing grab bars and handrails throughout the house and getting her a nice sleek walker and canes for use when outside. I'm pleased that she uses her walker all the time to walk the dog and get her exercise. Some of her friends hate using their walkers because it makes them feel old.

I have only fallen once and injured myself. I was in my early 50s. I was riding a bike and my daughter was too close to me, I ended up in someone's (tilted) driveway. I put out a hand to catch myself and broke that arm just below the wrist. A simple accident.
