My statement in my post is that on TV and what you see on movies are these big happy families. Everyone gets along(with the occasional exception). Successful adult children. Stable marriages left and right. Great family reunions. When grandma is on her death bed there is like 25 family members present. Too many idealistic stereotypes, which might have some basis 60 years ago, but I doubt if was wholly true
I don't know what sort of TV programs you are watching.

OP, even TV families aren’t like TV families. At least not anymore. Have you watched any TV sitcoms lately? They’re more like “Roseanne” or “The Middle” than “Father Knows Best” or “Leave It To Beaver.”

My husband and I and our two adult daughters are far from perfect, but we love each other and treat each other with affection and respect.

Having said that, I can't believe how many of our daughters' friends are shocked that we're so stereotypically "normal". It's depressing that so many families seem to struggle to have healthy relationships with each other. I wonder what the norm really is outside our little societal sampling?

Been said that all families have various levels of dysfunction.

I was raised in an A+ family until we became teen-agers. There is that.

We don’t watch TV much so I am out of touch, but back a decade or two ago there was a sickening number of people with perfect families. We do ROKU streaming these days-near zero TV shows. Regional news and PBS basic TV for $5 extra with our cable internet plan.

Glad to hear TV has gotten more realistic.

Didn't you say Mr5150 that one of your children is transgender? (sorry if I am remembering it wrong and it is a different poster)

Being transgender has been all over the media - TV, stage, film, documentaries, print and digital media, news reports - in recent years, and given respect, educating people, and providing information.

I am almost hysterical. I could tell stories about my family that would curl your hair. My family was miles away from perfect.
