>>and just like that, someone else bought it. Oh well!
I quick went to look at it, mschrief. Very pretty. It's an easy project if you can find a seamstress with basic skills and some fabric you like and you'll save a lot of money. (I know - the label. But you can keep it on. )
If I knew you were close I'd help you learn how to do it and we'd both feel good.
I keep a log of every cent I spend. I do it in an Excel file, but it could be written down or whatever.
For me, this automatically puts the brakes on. YMMV
Yes, this is a very good idea.
I find that people who write down everything they spend for a month, and then review it at the end of the month are shocked at how much they spend on stuff they barely remember.
I guess I'll never ever understand the mentality of just buying stuff you want but don't need and damned the consequences. Is this a disease? I mean it's like banging your head with a hammer, why do they do this? I'm sorry, I have a hard time feeling any sympathy for those people who did this to themselves.
I totally get what you're saying, but she is coming here for help, not sympathy; so try to have some compassion. Lots of other people who act this way are still in denial.
Back in the day, a credit card issue that was something I read and thought interesting was to FREEZE your creditcards in a LARGE container of ice...that way you would have to wait to use it...of course that was before interne shopping AND sites that "remember your info" for convenience.......
I suggest a conservator of some type be considered, cause you need to be held accountable BY yourself for your on benefit....the habits you described display a HUGE heart, but not one with the $$$$$ to support that habit. As the old saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I was quoting another story, not the OP. But I hear what you are saying.
Your last 97K of savings? Does this mean you have a pension or something else to live on? If the 97K is truly your discretionary money, sounds like you won't be happy unless you spend it all. Can you tie up the money in CDs; and leave out 5K per year to spend on others?
How will it feel to give to others as you run out of money and wind up with nothing? Will anyone help YOU out?
You simply cannot afford this level of spending and reckless behavior. You know it or you would not have posted. You need someone to dole out your money to you if you can't do it yourself.
Volunteer work will give you that warm and fuzzy and won't cost you a dime.
You will be shocked at the way you view your spending habits. It feels different paying with cash/checks than it does buying online/credit card. You will *feel* the money draining away.
It's one thing to click "buy" online and quite another to hand over a stack of $20 bills to a cashier.
